Heard a story from my friend about his 13-year old son, Marco. In class, Marco got the highest score at a long exam. But upon going over his test paper, he realized that his teacher overlooked one mistake. Now he was faced with a dilemna. No one else knew about that mistake. And his teacher already announced to his class that he got the highest score. It was so tempting to just be quiet about it.
Our kids will be faced with a lot of situations where important decisions have to be made and we won’t always be there to tell them what to do. That’s why it is so important to train them early. A 13-year old without training will not instinctively know the right thing to do. But if you have started to pound him with biblical principles as a child, and he has heard the same things over and over again growing up, time will come he will go back to them by default. Because in his mind, there is just no other way.
And so it was with Marco. He was tempted for a moment, but because he was trained to be honest and truthful from the beginning, he knew he had no other choice but to go to his teacher and show her his mistake. If all kids were trained like that, imagine how the next generation can turn our nation around!
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
